Don't eat the spinach
The growing investigation into the e-coli outbreak in bagged spinach is enough to scare you from eating produce. Where did the contamination occur? How can this be prevented in the future? Perhaps it's time for a re-examination of our farming practices, if indeed the problem occurred at the source. CNN is reporting that the guidelines set for produce are by and large, voluntary. That means people are being trusted to comply. Perhaps tighter regulation and more inspectors are needed. It's not just spinach we need to keep an eye on. Remember the mad cow scare? It hasn't happened here...yet. Or Avian Flu, again it hasn't hit us...yet. But some of the "factory farming" practices seem to be ripe for something to go wrong. I'll stick to the smaller "mom and pop" operations at the Farmers Market when possible. At least I'll know where my food is coming from.

Da Bears bought me this couch...
This weekend, the Bears did something that surprised some people, including the owner of a Chicago area furniture store. They shut out the Packers at Lambeau Field. The owner of World Furniture in Plano had promised everyone who bought furniture Labor Day weekend the purchases would be free if the Bears managed a shutout. He must have thought it unlikely that it would happen. Now he owes his customers about $300,000! Insurance will pick up most of the cost. There's a lesson to be learned here. If you're going to promise a freebie, be certain it's a sure bet. For example, "your furniture is free if Paris Hilton doesn't make an ass out of herself this week." "Your purchase is free if Tom Cruise denounces Scientology and marries Rosie O' Donnell." Or, unfortunately, the safest promotion ever, "your purchase is free if/when the Cubs win the World Series!"
